Poverty Rate on the Rise in Texas

According to an article written in The Dallas Morning News, there has been an increase of poverty by eleven percent what it was last year. Last year, according to the Census Bureau, the poverty rate in Texas was 17.3 percent, the sixth highest in the nation. The poverty rate among children currently is 25.6%. Slightly more than every one in four Texans under the age of 18 are affected by poverty. Robert Rector, conservative expert at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, suggests that promoting marriage as a norm once again would help slash child poverty rates by three-quarters. Many contest that the Census results are skewed, due to the amount of illegal immigrants there are living under the poverty level; however, though they may be skewed, it is speculated that the Census results still accurately display the troubles that still linger from the 2008 recession.
